F.A.Q.

Q. What is a PTO?

A. PTO stands for Parent Teacher Organization. The Dunwoody Springs Elementary School PTO Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit group operated by a group of parents/guardians, community members, teachers, and staff dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of all students at Dunwoody Springs. Our goals are to encourage interaction between family and school, serve as a source of support, and work with teachers, staff, and the community at large to enhance our children's educational experience. The PTO works closely with the school administration to meet these goals each year.

Q. Who can join?

A. Anyone who cares about the students and teachers at Dunwoody Springs can join. Parents, teachers, guardians, grandparents, community members, etc. are all welcome to join.

Q. Why should I join?

A. PTO membership is critical to the success of our organization. By joining the PTO, you help support programs that enhance the educational experience for our Dunwoody Springs Dolphin community. Membership also provides voting rights giving you a voice in how our organization runs and how funds are spent.

Q What do you do with the membership dues?

A. 100 percent of your membership dues go directly to the PTO to support programs like the following: Cultural arts performances, grade level STEAM events, in-house and remote field trips, classroom learning tools, student awards, and staff appreciation events to name a few. Membership dues help keep our events low to no cost to attend. 100 percent of your membership dues are put to work and help us avoid fundraisers to sell "stuff" like wrapping paper, candy, etc.

Q. What does it mean to be a member?

A. That depends on you. We invite you to become an active participant in your student’s education by being an active participant at Dunwoody Springs Elementary. The level of involvement is up to you! Whether serving on the PTO Board, donating items for teacher appreciation, attending meetings, giving input, or volunteering to plan events - every little bit helps!

Q. Do I have to volunteer?

A. No. While volunteering is highly encouraged it is not required for membership. The success of our events relies heavily on our volunteers and donations. If you are unable to donate your time, there are still other ways you can contribute. Fill out the volunteer survey and let us know what works for you!

Q. Do I have to attend meetings?

A. No, however participation through attendance at PTO meetings gives you a voice. You can provide valuable input that will help decide what we do as a group, how funds are spent, and who will lead in the coming year.

Q. What is the difference between a PTA and a PTO?

A. A local PTA - or parent teacher association - is associated with the national PTA, a formal membership organization. Local PTA groups receive various types of support from the national PTA, but must also pay dues to the national organization and abide by state and national group rules. A PTO is an independent, unaffiliated group. Each PTO has its own set of bylaws which govern the organization's activities. A PTO does not pay dues to any national organization.
